Going to south INDIA by dazzle_h on 25 January 2004 4:09pm
Hi, This summer I'm off to South India with my girlfriend, and I am unbelievably excited!

Have anyone been before, and do you have tips or suggestions?

South India is the most fascinating part of India for me (along with the far northern states of the country). It's very exotic and traditional. Much more than the mid-north. It holds onto it's roots much more. Because the Moghuls never made it down south, everything is very very Hindu orientate indeed. From the architecture, to the clothes people wear. It's just a different world to Delhi (for example). The most fascinating state in the south is Tamil Nadu. That region is straight out of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Ancient temples everywhere, amongst busy and dusty towns. Places to check out are "Kanchipuram" with its silk making, and it's numerous temples dotted everywhere. Bullock carts roaming around, men and ladies in traditional clothing, temple music, shaven headed priests with dark eyes. Temple musicians and Elephants walking around in Shri Meenakshi temple in "Madurai". Fantastic.

Tamil Nadu was my first stop when i first went to India. I made a good choice, because it was incredibly exotic. Excellent food. Thalis (set meals) for a few cents. South Indian coffee being poured from a great height is just the ticket on a cold morning at a bus stop. Oh it's amazing. Highly reccomended. Another place to check out is Mysore. It had it's own Maharaja at one stage, and the palace remains. Inside it's just awash with jewels, paintings, bizzare items, and fantastic architecture. Just outside of Mysore are the pilgramage hills. You can get up there by local bus. Then on the walk back down (the steps side) you find a massive Bull idol wish is waited upon by a priest, and garlands around it's kneck. You'll love South India. :)
