Question by commodorekt on 13 February 2004 12:03am

I'm going to Scotland in August. Does anyone have any suggestions on good historical sites to see? I'm aware of all the usuals, but if anyone knows anything not-so-popular that they thought was interesting...

I guess you could always go hunting for the Loch Ness Monster, like I did. I went up to Inverness, spent a week with a camera, a pair of binoculars and a large supply of fairtrade chocolate, just sitting by the Loch, hoping to get the picture of a lifetime.
There are quite a few metaphors for what I actually got, but never mind - it's a beautiful and tranquil place.
Try going to the Hebrides or somewhere like that, I'd say. Very beautiful.

Beware of the Loch Midgies. I clearly rememeber one family holiday when i was a kid. Me and my brother were in a tent, and my parents were in another. We moaned so much because we were being eaten alive by midgies coming in throught the tent's vent. In the end, my father had to get out of his tent in the middle of the night (naked) and sit in the car with us, smoking, because it was the only way to drive Midgies away. The little b***** get everywhere. What a strange memory of Scotland that was..hmmmm..hehe. I was born in Scotland, but we saw a lot of it when i was younger. So i cannot remember exact places we went to. Although i clearly remember Bannockburn and the massive statue of Robert the Bruce, with the little battle museum next to it. That was pretty good.
