Picture Gallery from a recent trip to Southeast Asia by TravelChampion on 16 April 2004 12:27am

The intro for this section suggests you "share your own globe-trotting experiences" - so here goes :

I recently returned from a 24 day trip to an area often referred to as IndoChina. In total, I visited 5 different countries - Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Here is a link to the gallery.......

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions gratefully received?!

Bye for now,
Andrew

Great pics Andrew. I've got my own set of photos from the Angkor temples which i must put up sometime on the internet. I'm lazy, that's my problem. Your people pictures are fantastic. I like that one with the kid peeping round the temple column at the entrance to a temple. Top right picture in "Local Inhabitants" section. :)

The photos are inspiring. I would like to go there sometime. Did you use a travel company or self planned?

Tibetan Sunset,

Hope Andrew does'nt mind if i answer. But South East Asia (or more specifically, the Indochina regiosn of Laos,Cambodia,Thailand) are very simple to get around independently. Perhaps one of the most popular backpacking regions in Asia. Everything is set up well for independent travellers. Check it out. Lovely region. Bit overcrowded with other travellers now, but still a very rewarding region to spend time in.

A bit of both. I don't want to make any reply sound like some sort of "Advertisement" but the Company I booked with {Explore Worldwide} are quite good about letting people 'indulge' in a small parts of independent travel, if and when the itinerary allows {and, as they would put it, as long as it doesn't spoil the group dynamics?!}.
Quick Examples - The initial first few days of my trip were to have been a typical two day introduction to Bangkok {i.e. Golden Palace, Klongs, Temples etc} ...something I have done twice before. So I arranged with them to go to Chaing Mai for a couple of days {from where I made the day trip to the Golden Traingle and Myanmar Border Crossing} before joining the group in Sukhothai.
Another 'little adventure' was a side trip on a day off to Cham Island.

Agreed it is easy to make your own way this part of the world. If you have plenty of time I think it would be great to 'amble around' the whole area....but if you have to be back in work on a certain date - AND YOU WANT TO SEE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN A RELATIVELY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME {AND I NEARLY ALWAYS DO!!!} - then it's almost certainly better and more relaxing to let a Group Guide and a Tour Company look after you!

As for "which of the intrepid travelers are you?" - If you see a person standing in front of the photo a long way in the distance rather than up close, that's probably me.

Thanks for the nice feedback everyone!

Andrew

Wow, those are some fantastic photos, Andrew. I love the one of the prayers at Cao Dai Temple, and the shots of monks... and the one in (I think) the Marble Mountains in Vietnam is nicely atmospheric.

I'm just back from a trip to Japan, but haven't had a chance to put my photos together. I'll inflict them on the forum once I get my act together. In the mean time, here's one that I'm particularly proud of, taken at the south entrance to Tokyo's Shinjuku station at rush hour:
