"Lord Of The Rings" in NZ, it's not a computer generated landscape!! by ellenpc on 12 December 2002 12:35am

I know at times I've been known to grumble about summer Christmases and other Southern Hemispherical oddities here in NZ, but I just want to confirm to all potential travellers to NZ that the scenery you see on the two 'Lord Of The Rings" films is the real thing. The various dwellings of the Hobbits and elves etc were constructed, but the surrounding landscape has not been enhanced or changed. It really is that breathtaking and magnificent.

A lot of the mountain location shots in "the Twin Towers" were filmed about a hours drive inland to the west of Christchurch (my home). All of these scenic wonders are on our doorstep here and throughout NZ.

It's quite amazing that such a variety of different vegetation/landscape types are represented in such a small country. In a short car journey up the middle of the South Island you will pass through dry, rolling plains, humid sticky swampy jungle bush, alpine tussock, rocky, snowy mountains to green rolling pastureland and thick pine forests.

You'll have the place to yourself as there are relatively few people around. We've been known on car journeys to travel for 4 hours and not see another car!! (Which rather defeats a game of "how many red cars can you count until we get there??" with the children. You have to look for unusually coloured sheep instead!! :-}

So come, come!! It is the real thing not computer generated!!! :-}}}}}}}}}]

Yours, the proud "Pom" in NZ

I'm in the North Island Ellen, and live about 8 miles from "Hobbitton", as seen in the movie. The farm where Hobbitton is built has just been opened to the public. You can now take a tour of the place which may be fun to people who haven't seen the landscape, but to me is a little 'ho-hum' as I've lived in the area for so long. (said with tongue in cheek!!) Still, it'd be interesting, but no Hobbits! See ya.

You are lucky, even though I've not been there (yet!). People who have tell me its just wonderful.

Any suggestions on how to best spend 5 weeks travelling in NZ. Should I use Christchurch as my base and head straight for Queenstown?

I'm be there in April 2004, is it too late in the year to visit? As I'm looking to do the Milford Track but I'm slighty concerned the track my be shut due to Winter being too close?

What do you NZ guys think?

Hi infinity :-}]]

Great to hear you're coming to NZ. :-}}

It'll still be Autumn in April so it might be OK for the Milford Track. Best to check out the track website for the most accurate info though.

You certainly could use Christchurch as your base and then as you say go to Queenstown (excellent place! There is so much to do and see, I'll put more about this in my next message :-}) and then Milford sound, the Glaciers, over to Greymouth on the TranzScenic train ride (spectacular) up to the Nelson region and on up to Golden Bay and the Nelson Lakes District.

In hindsight, would you need to have Christchurch as a base? As the travel is quite extensive from one place to the next. All the areas mentioned above have excellent accommodation options and are all internet linked.

How were you planning on travelling? Rental car, coach?? As this makes a difference to the planning options.

I'll do some snoopimg and see what I can find out here about the Milford Track. Would you be interested in the Abel Tasman Track or the Heaphy Track as well??

Ellen

Ellen,

Great, thanks for the info.

Yeah you are right we would be hiring a camper van and driving around the two islands. I just meant we would fly into Christchurch and explore from then on.

I've not heard of the Abel Tasman or the Heaphy track, are they worth doing too/instead?

Thanks again
Infinity
