Cycling the Pacific Coast - Canada to Mexico by ziggy549 on 27 December 2002 3:00pm

Earlier this year a friend and I cycled, for charity, along the 1,800 miles that makes up the Pacific Caost of the USA from Canada to Mexico, what an amazing trip, at an average of 14mph you see things that you wouldn't by car !! from migrating grey whales to 2,000 yr old Redwoods it's was an amazing adventure that you must do !! it's also started me off on all my Palins Travel books again, seeing Micheal sat in his hired Morgan on highway 1 in California.....we cycled along there....we keep saying. well done Michael and as my 9 yr old keeps shouting...'welease woderick'.....I'd love to share my experiences with anyone who is considering visiting this part of the world.

We cycled the route in 22 days with only 1 and 1/2 days rest, we began organising the trip 18 months before going, as we were not cyclists we needed that amount of time to train, it's hard to think whilst stuffing my self this xmas that this time last year we were cycling 200 miles a week in preperation !! it was also great to read the Full Circle book again, with Michael in places we'd cycled along, San Francisco, Highway 1 etc, it just goes to show what an awesome trip the Full Circle one was, our 1,800 miles by bike was covered in the last chapter !! I did think about our next trip following the Full Circle Michael did, but I reckon on bikes that would be a nightmare, and as part of the route in China is now under water !!! We've decided our next charity venture will be from the pacific coast to the atlantic coast....across America, perhaps Micael would like to join us and make a short story out of it ! I'm sure there must be a funny heading for that some where !

You can read our daily updates on our website at www.bobbyonabike.com we would love to share our experience with as many people as possible, we in a small way experienced some of the things Michael has done on all his trips, that is the amazing support and hospitality of those en route, without whom these trips would not be possible. It amazed me how much MP must have written each day in his note pad to have recreated the days so well !! I tried to keep up a diary....but failed miserably !!

This may be a dead thread, but I recommend a Pocket PC and foldable keyboard for journal-keeping while on a bicycle tour. I used a Compaq iPaq Pocket PC and Targus Stowaway keyboard on a recent round-the-world bicycle trip. A Pocket PC is a must-have item for global travelers, IMHO. Bring along a tri-band GSM mobile phone, and you could maintain a website for friends and family to view while you're "out there." BTW, I've cycled the Oregon and California coasts in the past. For people considering the trip, if you'll be cycling during the summer months, go with the prevailing winds from north to south. And, beware the rcreational vehicles and logging trucks.
