Trying to plan a trip to Prague - if anybody has any tips about places to stay I would be most grateful.

Jeez, I should think about this before I write something, but I won't. Prague's got a huge assortment of hotels for the traveller who doesn't mind SIMPLE accomodations. In particular there's this big concentration just east of the city center- I call it the Hotel Ghetto- in a not particularly attractive quarter. Some of the 2 and 3 star hotels there which come to mind are the Tri Korun ("Three Crowns"), the Amadeus (I think that there's also one called the Mozart)(I don't think there's one called the Wolfgang), the Dalimil, and the Grand. There's also a place called the Kafka, which has a huge cockroach working at the reception (ha ha- the brochure doesn't say anything about past guests being metamorphosed). I've stayed in all these places.
These are all in walking distance from a major transportation hub called Florenc (pronounced the way you'd guess "floor-ents"), and there are bus and streetcar links. There's a major subway stop, too, but since last summer's floods, large parts of the 3 subway lines are out of commission.
Like I said, the neighborhood looks kind of cruddy, but I've always felt safe there. It's not in the center, but it's not hard to get to the center from there. Because of it's location, the hotels are less expensive and are less likely to be fully booked, even in the high tourist season. There are, of course, many more, for people who want to be in the center and people who aren't particular about where specifically in Prague they're staying

Intrepid, thank you for the advice. It is great to have this site where we can exchange thoughts and information that we might not have otherwise been able to get:-)

When are you going, by the way? Or have you already gone? I ask because I've got more info on other Prague hotels in a few other locations if anybody is interested. Even if they're not interested, I still have it. - David

Initially thought it might be March, but funds are looking a little low as both my boyfriend and I have bought flats recently so it may be postponed for now. I still very much want to go though so any information you have would be very much appreciated.
