Bali Balderdash! by lckt13 on 10 January 2005 7:14pm

Most whom we met here in the US visited Ubud and said they've been to Bali. Balderdash i say! Ubud is lovely but it's always been a haven for expats, artists, trust fund brats and yoga types searching for the Holy Grail of spirituality.

Bali is more than Ubud. it is Amed, Medewi, Pemetran, Singara, and all points east west north and south EXCLUDING Nusa Dua which is an erzats Corporate Holiday ghetto.

As far a searching for spirituality is concerned one not spend 15 hours in coach from SFO to Hong Kong and another 5 to Denpasar. One can look in their quiet places in or around home.

Bali is not a necessary stop on the journey to nirvana.

I suggest skipping Bali altogether and spend time in the Philippines where there is more diversity and intrigue.

Ubud is part of the Bali experience but only a part. I most enjoyed trekking the volcanoes outside Ubud, Cecak dances, and the best snorkelling I've ever done off the black sand beach at Kalibukbuk.
I did the mushroom thing too at Legian but I was young then and still experimenting.
Bali is fine, not paradise but worth a look around.
