Bulgaria II by intrepid on 21 January 2005 8:18pm

Please, could anybody-particularly the people who contributed to the 'Bulgaria' thread a while back (Zak, GillP, PaulWilson and Treelooney)- tell me something about Bulgaria? I'm wondering especially about travelling inside the country by bus and I'm having a HECK of a time finding anything like a bus schedule on the net.
Could you tell me what the prices of buses, trains, hotels were?
Any info on Bucharest would be nice, too.

Whatever you do, don't go to Bulgaria for the beaches or a family holiday!
There are many negatives I could mention about Bulgaria, but if your travelling the country they are eliminated... Buses are so cheap they will seam free to you, I never used a bus in Bulgaria but taxis, a 3-mile trip in a taxi costs roughly £2.00 (and that's at the tourist resorts so it should cost less inland)

Most of the hotels are atrocious in Bulgaria! The food served is of poor quality but only because there is much demand, the people are very nice but you WILL see the Bulgarian Mafia and probably the Italian Mafia, they are easy to spot; they are the only people in Bulgaria who own brand new black BMWs, Jaguars and Mercedes Bends! They always wear black sunglasses and at night always wear black leather!

I'm afraid I don't know about the train services, I guess they are cheap like everything else in Bulgaria, but are probably late!(just like the UK!) If I were in Bulgaria I would defiantly go to Sofia - the capital, it's lovely, it's like a tiny village, but big! There is no centre or main meeting place in Sofia like most cities of the world (but there is one currently being constructed, don't ask how!)

There are many Turkish Mosques to visit and Orthodox churches to see.

*I hope you come back to read this!*

I think I'll read it now, to be on the safe side.
Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of going, if I go at all, in Februrary or March when the beaches don't sound like they'd be much fun. I'd be going alone to Sofia and some of the other cities, like Plovdiv and Veliko Turnovo.
My extensive mafia connections should come in useful. As far as hotels go, I'm not too particular. As long as they have a bed and a door that stays locked, that's really all I need. Are there any hotels you'd recommend, or at least any that are less bad than the others?

I'd recommend any chain hotels to be on the safe side ('Sol' ect) but they wont be as cheep.
