The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Carnival 2005 by perfectbitch on 28 August 2005 1:23pm
So, I decided to stay here this year. It's high noon and the sounds on the street are the clanging of culinary utensils and the ubiquitous whistles. The music is beginning to drown those sounds out now and there is a resonating bass in the near distance competing against hip hop and soul. Out of the rear of the flat, the competition is between old soul and Tamla and Irish music. It'll reach cacophany within the hour. The sound system that is outside my front door hasn't started yet. He is a crap dj who loves the sound of his own voice so I stay in the rear of the flat then.

It's a glorious day but I think there will be a significant drop in attendance this year. It's the children's parade today - thsy really get down and boogie all in the most amazing costumes, some of which are very heavy but they carry on with such determination.

Ooh! It seems the crap dj has been replaced this year - this could mean I'll stay for the 2nd day with the adults parade!!

Bye for now - I'll post more later.

It's 10.14pm BST. Well, the crap dj was only having a break and the attendance was noticably lower than previous years. However, the weather held and the parade was spectacular with much energetic dancing by the excited children. This years theme is Unity and Diversity. The shebeen across the road from me is playing some great music in the garden and partying is paramount. I've only heard one bottle break so far. I wish there was a way of posting the sounds and aromas of the day. There is something intoxicating about the smell of jerk spices combined with the sweet smoke of dubious tobacco. I resisted the temptation to indulge in a piece sugar cane but I came home with a helping of jerk chicken, salad rice and peas which was delicious.
So, in the main a noisy but peaceful day and plenty of smiling faces. Linz.

Sunday, 2.45pm BST.
Wow, the party at the shebeen was still going strong at 6 this morning so I haven't had much in the way of sleep. It's another glorious day and the crowd numbers seem slightly up on yesterday. The crap dj hasn't arrived yet - perhaps he wss at the shebeen last night - so the music at the moment is ok. I have been cleaning this morning and am now about to join the throng. I'll definitely need the sugar cane today - instant delicious energy - like no other form of sugar. I am not a sugar junkie as I rarely consume it but the experience of sugar cane is special. Linz.
