help me!... i need cat advice! by Sophie-Louise on 8 February 2006 1:49pm

i am staying in milton keynes in my brother's house looking after his cat called nemo while he's in new york.

nemo was fine and liked me all last night when my brother and his partner were here. then this morning they left for heathrow at 5am and let the cat back inside. it came into the room and started biting and scratching me! ack! i'm scared of it! it keeps attacking me for no apparent reason! the only place i'm safe is the toilet and i can't spend all day in there! hahahahaha! help me! some cat advice please! what am i doing wrong?!!!

Sophie, have you had contact with the cat before? What kind of cat is it? You are probably doing nothing wrong. You may have a case where the cat only trust your brother and his partner. Male or female cat? How old? Was s/he ever abused?

no i haven't had contact before last night. they introduced me to her and i played with her (i bought her a toy to 'bond' hehe) and everything was fine. maybe she got frightened when her owners left her with a strange girl hahahaha. she is 2 and they've had her since she was a kitten so she's never been abused, she's a spoilt little princess! she's lovely i want to get along with her! boo hoo

Maybe she has got confused with your brother and his partner going off and leaving just you there. She'll come round eventually.

A friend of mine has 5 cats and if I go there, apart from one, they all run and hide because they probably think I am the vet! (We are both volunteers at an animal clinic and the vet has been to my friend's flat a few times to see the cats.)

She sounds like she misses their particular attention and "spoiling". My advice is to play it cool and hard to get, feed and water her and be serene and cheerful. I reckon she'll come round in a couple of days. Good luck. If she tries to bite or scratch, a loud hiss may deter her. Linz

Everyone elses advice is on the money. You see, Ashley hides from strangers. If we were gone, you would never see her. She would live in the bedroom closet.

Poor Ashley!

Anyway, Sophie, the best reaction is no reaction. Calmness. It's easy for me to say that, I'm not getting bitten and scratched! But I have "dealt" with relatives' cats. They don't usually want to sink theit teeth in and hold, it's usually just a sort of warning nip. They are trying to posture and intimidate. If they see that you are not intimidated, that it's not working, they'll usually give up. "Usually!"

After getting nipped or swiped at, I use a very quiet voice and say, "Nope. Sorry. I'm not impressed. Sorry to disappoint you."

Also, cats are naturally nocturnal, and perhaps his/her sleeping pattern has been interrupted, so he/she is a little crabby. Ask tusconmike about that sometime, right, tuscon?!

Sophie, she is just trying to figure out her place in the hierachy. The best thing to do is ignore her. If you stare at her a lot (which is very easy to do subconciously) then she will automatically come to you. That's why cats always go to people who don't like them!! Ignore her, if she wants attention she will come but make it clear it's on your terms.

Good luck

thanks very much guys! she seems to be alright now. i even picked her up and she sat on my lap! i was just worried that she was stressed out and upset, and i dont' like being bitten lol. she's a strange one though! at the moment she's asleep in the bathroom sink... her favourite place apparently!

Soph get one of those catnip toys they send cats kinda berserk but as Nemo sounds like he aready IS berserk what do you have to lose?
Better to attack a capnip mouse than attack YOU!
