The Blitz London 1940 by tucsonmike on 16 February 2006 7:24pm

PBS had a two hour special last night they did with Channel 4. I can't even begin to imagine. I mean I've read many things about the blitz, but how widespread it was etc. My goodness.

I watched that, too, and I was just in shock. I've read about it before, but the show was done so well that I really felt the urgency and terror of the situation. I still don't understand how St. Paul's survived.

You know what was my favorite part (other than the saving of St. Paul's, of course)? There was a couple returning from a trip to the country, and since the tube was down, they decided to walk across most of the city because the husband belonged to a rescue team and he wanted to help. So they're walking along, in the middle of something like 300 incendiary bombs dropping per minute, and they get a bus to travel part of the way. I mean, THEY GOT A BUS. They said that bus drivers were allowed to continue their routes at their own discretion, and here this conductor is driving his double decker bus through the middle of the blitz. That just killed me.

Incidentally, this photo right here is why I love the British: http://www.dotcoma.it/milkman.jpg. (I hope the link works.)

Thanks for responding Valerie. The story about the couple was great. I think what saved St. Pauls was that the bombers were called back because of bad weather. Hitler was furious of course, then as the war went on Hitler got more furious more often...Happens when you are a lunatic.
