bbc 2 - sat. evening by andrea_nyc on 10 May 2006 7:30pm
A friend of mine in the UK just told me about this:

Life on Air
Sat 13 May, 7:40 pm - 8:40 pm 60mins

"It's 50 years since David Attenborough first joined BBC TV - after being turned down for a job in radio! Since then he's brought the world's most amazing wildlife spectacles into our living rooms - from Zoo Quest to Life on Earth and The Blue Planet.

Who can forget David's close encounter with gorillas in Africa, or his gravity-defying intro to The Living Planet? It's amazing to think that he has probably seen more of the world than anyone else alive.

Michael Palin first met David back in Monty Python days - when David was Director of Programmes at the BBC - and has known him ever since. This is Michael's behind-the-scenes story of David Attenborough's remarkable career, and a lighter side to Britain's best-loved television personality."

WHY doesn't BBC America air shows like this?!!! (And, oooh, there was a Stephen Fry show following it!) I am so sick of endless repeats of home make-over shows and Benny Hill! (grumble, grumble, grumble....) Does the BBC consider all Americans to be idiots? (more grumbles)

Thank you for the link Andrea. I know Sight, couldn't agree more. BBC's American division probably has all sorts of "suits" surveying who watches. I've worked with enough of said suits to know how vapid some of them are (watch the Apprentice). Think of the beginning of the movie Meaning of Life with the woman giving birth and John Cleese playing the silly administrator. It is kind of like, Saturday night Britain gets to watch Mr. P, and we get Footballers Wives. (We got this lousy t-shirt). Luckily, I have PBS and Are You Being Served?

Yes - it's sad for us in the states... My only hope is that one day the BBC will allow downloadable content outside the UK. I'd certainly pay for individual shows. Perhaps this will happen in the not too distant future. Along with jetpacks. :)

It was a fascinating program. And apart from this obviously excellent program "itself", it made me lament the loss of the fantastic kind of previous programs it portrayed. I remember some of them at the time in the 70's and 80's. So informative and educational. Such as that Civilizations one. What do we have now? Top 100 Movie bloopers or other Crap like that, repeated over and over again. Or 15 cameras focused on a bunch of celebrity twats and tarts in a big brother house, bickering with each other. Some good programs appear every so often, such as that Planet Earth one recently. Aswell as some historical ones. But mostly it's heavily commercial tie ins and things like that. The TV companies are taking everybody for a ride. Easy money. Very little love of the art anymore. Nowadays I hardly watch TV. Maybe one thing a week will interest me. I use the internet more because it is informative in the way that those older programs used to be. And, I was totally unaware that Richard Attenborough was so heavily involved in the pioneering of television itself, until tonight. Btw, don't be re-born as a collobus monkey :/

Sounds like a good program. I have stuff to do and will have Keeping Up Appearances, Waiting for God, As Time Goes By and Are you Being Served on.
