Sicily Report by simon1287 on 26 June 2006 10:13pm
Hello again!
I have just arrived back this afternoon at Stansted after a week touring Sicily.
During one week, I have driven 880 Miles, stayed at six Hotels / B&B's and got a good taste of what Sicily is all about.
I'd recommend to all considering Sicily as a destination to put Taormina, Noto, Cefalu and at least an afternoon in Erice at the top of your list.
These places have marvellous restaurants, good accomodation options and lots to see plus Cefalu & Taormina have good Beaches for those who like to tan!
Don't be put off driving in Sicily by tales of bad driving practices. Outside of Palermo and Catania, the roads are mostly long, pretty empty and stress-free.
When driving along the north coast, you can avoid Palermo following the Diversion signs. However, if you wish or have to drive close to Palermo when driving along the north coast, just use your mirrors, prepare for 5 lanes of traffic on a 2 lane road using your mirrors and you should be fine!

If you'd also like a taste of Calabria in Mainland Italy, I'd recommend flying into Lamezia Terme Airport and driving the scenic A3 down to Villa San Giovanni.
From here, you can get the regular ferries to Messina (Sicily).
I took the car on the Private ferry both ways for only 23(EUR) each way.
These ferries are published to run every 10 minutes so you won't wait long.
If anybody else wishes to ask any questions, I'd be happy to answer anything.
