The Chatter Box : Blathering On

I'm back! by Spursfan on 7 February 2007 10:28am

Hi everyone! I am freshly back from Turkey, where the weather was clear blue skys and sunny, but cold! However it was ok with a jumper rather than a coat (though the Turks all had coats on!).

It was very emotional going into Alaattin's shop though I managed to keep it together - just. A very close friend (his family and ours are like one) told us there had had to be a court case (presume like an inquest) as Alaattin had had a row a few days before with the chap who worked for him (whose family we also know but whose name I can never remember) and they wanted to make sure this other chap hadn't shot him! It must have been awful for him as he was in deep shock, having witnessed the accident, then them thinking he may have done it....

Anyway, according to Hakan it was all filmed on the shop camera. There were 3 people in the shop; Alaattin, this other chap, and a policelady friend of Alaattin. Alaattin is cleaning his gun (Hakan said that Alaattin 'loved his gun too much' in that he was always cleaning it, basically playing with it). Suddenly you can tell the gun has gone off; Alaattin asks the other two if they are alright - they say yes. He then unzips his jacket and realises there is blood there. He tells the lad to phone for ambulance and then runs into the street, turning to the left and shouting (in Turkish of course) 'AMBULANCE!', then to the right and shouting again 'AMBULANCE!'. He then came back into the shop and collapsed. Hakan said that what made it worse was that Alaattin had scratched an 'X' on the front of the bullet, and was using a .9 (I think he said?). There was barely a scratch on the front but the exit wound was horrendous, this sort of gun & bullet would kill an elephant, Hakan said.

This made it all seem so much worse if that's possible; I had assumed that when we were told he was shot in the heart he hadn't known anything about it. Apparently it was adrenalin that 'let' him do all that. Poor, poor Alaattin.

On a positive note, the streets were apparently full of people for his 'last journey' (as they put it) so that shows how highly he was thought of.

How ironic that someone who was so gentle and kind should be so passionate about shooting/hunting, and about guns and that he should end his days because of it. There are lessons to be learnt but I suspect they won't be.

Will tell more about our trip another time, it doesn't seem right to do it now.

Anne

Glad you're back Anne. What a dreadful turn of events for Alaattin. I hope you can find some closure now. I know how hard it is to ignore tragic mental images. Thinking of you,

Linz
