I'm rootin' for you, Ken! Keep working that body even if it hurts. I vow to keep fit and strong over the summer and will try to time it so I'm at my strongest come ice hockey season. I go for a short but sweet bike ride every few days doing a steep hill. I really should try to escalate my effort and do the hill twice. I row on my machine and use dumbells as well.

This isn't an athletic endeavour, rather the minimum I must do to survive. Growing old sucks, but I recommend it!

LT, I had a good workout at badminton last night - played 5 mixed doubles games and won 3. Not bad for a man of my age?! Badminton finishes for the summer next week so I'll have to find some other form of strenuous exercise, probably short tennis or back to my country walks.

That IS good, Ken. I found the rapid back and forth movement required in badminton to be exhausting to the point of rubber-legs. A little extra incentive to keep one's body weight down.

You have me all pumped up! I signed up for summer ice hockey today. 18 games between July 19 and September 1.

I have a month to get in shape for 'training camp'.

I've got a cold. Some people would call it man flu. I'm taking it easy for a few days anyway.

Good to hear of your pursuit of an active life, Ken. I was getting my tennis form back to where I need it...able to play with other middle-aged men who aren't tennis experts. Then I sprained my ankle. First time in 50 years! So I gave it a few weeks of ice and elevation, then taped it and tried playing. Aggravated it.

Now I hit balls at the driving range. Not well, usually not straight, but I hit them hard. Played nine the other night and did poorly. I need to keep swinging as I have an eighteen hole tournament to play in early July and don't want to run out of jam. We're playing best ball, and using carts. With a 2:00 tee off, the twenty of us will be the only guys on the course, so it will be fun regardless of how well I do.

I'm recovering from a chest infection - started the antibiotics yesterday. I might post a bit more than usual while I'm poorly.

We had a call from our granddaughter-in-law (to be, but they live together so same thing!) yesterday to say our grandson Simon had been taken into hospital in Worcester with a deflated lung !!

She rang again later to say he'd had a chest drain and that from an x-ray taken it seemed as though the lung was inflating. Simon had felt better as soon as they had inserted the drain; they also gave him morphine for the pain. He is having another x-ray this morning and if all is well he go home.

He is only 20, and a smoker for several years - don't know if this is connected to his smoking but it can't help and he has been ordered to stop by the doctors (they both smoke but away from the children).

Chest infection is getting better although I am weakened from it. I'll be trying to build up my strength again over the next few days.

Hope Simon is OK, Anne, and I hope you get better soon, Ken,

Thank you Sue. He is fine now - though naturally it gave him a fright!! He has been told it could happen again, and so has been told to give up smoking - and he told me he is committed to that saying it must have been a 'sign from above', and his partner is having a go at stopping too. Also he can't scuba dive without having thorough tests first and can't fly for 6 months. He told me when he phoned that the pain of the drain (I'm a poet and didn't know it!) was excruciating; he said when it was taken out it was as if someone had just switched off the pain. I neglected to ask if it was worse than the pain of the actual collapsed lung!!
