How do YOU Learn a Foreign Language. by tucsonmike on 15 June 2007 3:34pm

I could not resist this. All I could think of was the George Macdonald Fraser novels with his anti-hero Harry Flashman. Flashman could not handle Greek and Latin under Dr. Arnold @ Rugby. In the novels, he learned all sorts of other languages. How? In bed!

Now that I have gotten my silliness out of my system, what language other than your own do you speak, how did you learn it and how do you practice?

I very much want to learn Italian but however much I listen and read its just not sticking in my mind, I know a few phrases but if I was to start a conversation with an Italian person they would ramble on and I wouldnt understand a word of it!

We have lots of languages in Europe and when we go on a longish holiday I usually get a phrase book and pick out the essentials from that. If the essentials work then I use the phrase book to try some more of the basics. I learned a bit of French at school, did a refresher in it a couple of years ago and have used the phrase book technique in Germany and Greece. Although I've been to some Spanish islands I've never tried to speak it although I think tomorrow in Spanish is manyana. I may have a few words of other languages in my mind but never took them too far. Perestroika means restructuring in Russian and I used to think it meant working together but you'd have to do that to achieve restructuring.

Ce'st tres difficile, Kaz. I am also trying to practice Spanish with some of the warehouse people @ work and I am trying to practice with a woman who sometimes helps out at Jimmys.

The French, well, I may take a class to bolster it.

Well, I found out Alliance Francaise has a Tucson branch. So voila, a place to practice.
