My Poem by Spursfan on 10 August 2007 1:43pm

Just over 10 years ago I retired very early on ill-health grounds from my job in Youth and Community.

One of my colleagues presented me with a framed poem she had written about me:

ODE TO ANNIE

Bye bye Annie, we're all here to say
Please don't cry on your special day
We're gathered here to wish you well
So stay awhile then leave this hell.

What are you wearing we have to ask
A purple skirt. leather trousers, A BASQUE!!
A glittery jumper covered with pearls
A Tottenham scarf to cover your curls?

Long stays in Turkey have kept you quite sane
Several pop concerts have been your domain
Elton John, The Doors and U2
Amazing what Bono can do for you.

Hedgehogs and cats are close to your heart
Sophie and Simon think you're quite smart
Pamela Anderson, your woman to follow
Now some might find that a bit hard to swallow.

So stay a while Annie and let's have a drink
Only one though as you may turn quite pink
Remember your mates as you're cruising the town
'COS WE'LL BE IN HERE SO YOU DON'T KNOCK US DOWN

Obviously it was in the days before Tosun or he'd no doubt have a verse of his own!!! (Sophie and Simon are our two eldest grandchildren).

The Pammie thing was a joke, as when I was learning to scuba I used to say I was her hahahaha!

Nice, innit?

;-)

Nice! And what did you get for a leaving present?
I got a coffee blender/maker, seemed very posh for those far-off days, when I left salaried library work. I still have the big greetings card, expect you've got yours too. Local government was big on leaving celebrations, i remember.

I think I had the money !!! And flowers. And a big card. And nice faxes from full-time youth workers, all of which I've kept - bless them.

I used to nip in to the office every so often but with the last restructure most of the office was broken up and people are based all over the county now so there's no point. (In Staffs they have to have (it seems) a restructure every three years or so or the whole Council self destructs!!)

;-)

I bumped into a colleague on Saturday while walking Tosun (retired now) and she says that it changed so much she doesn't bother going in either.

Shame because it was like a family when I was there, glad I worked there when I did.

Liked the poem. Sometimes things change to something we do not recognize.

Anne, and Mike: yes, local government changes constantly (I wish i could think it was a good thing). Anne, you must secretly be quite glad you're not there - and Mike, (saw your good blog, by the way, LOVE the hat!)-I bet NJ library has changed after you left, too
-off the thread of the poem! it's really touching when someone takes the trouble to do a personal good-bye as your colleague did for you.

awww it's such a nice feeling when people write poems for you! so thoughtful and personal, i'd be happy with just that as a leaving present!!

'Tis nice yes :) Personalized gifts are so much nicer than bought stuff.
When I returned from England a while ago Sophie made me a creme egg activity bag to entertain me on the plane (seriously!!) including pens in the colours of a creme egg wrapper, a book with puzzles and word searches and all sorts of bits and pieces, it's one of the best pressies I've EVER been given :)

Glad you enjoyed it Linda. Maybe I will wear said hat to Krakow, but what will Uncle Piotr think?;)

Uncle will be unfazed, you may still have a trail of admiring small children following you around!
