Melbourne Cup by kazzzz on 7 November 2007 7:57am

Any Aussies have any luck on the big race yesterday??? My Mum, Jess and I all put a bet on a horse called Purple Moon, for a place and it came second and we all won $18!!! It's the first time any of us have ever placed as bet.

My dad backed Efficient for a win and a place, so he'll get something like $31 from the TAB. I backed Maybe Better, which was scratched. Bah.

This seemed like an appropriate thread to comment that there is a new man in the hot seat in Oz. I can't remember his name but Howard is no longer Prime Minister after 4 terms in office - a very successful run.

Kevin Rudd. The first world leader to be named Kevin. Bravo!

I see you're still deluded about Australia's importance in the world, Missy.

Brendan Nelson is the new Liberal Party leader. Don't you just love the irony of the Liberal Party, having bombarded the electorate with "UNION BOSSES ARE BAD" nonsense during the campaign, electing a former union boss as its new leader?

I'm still thrilled myself about the result. Did Howard lose his seat in the end? There was that stuff about an anti-Islam leaflet going out via the Liberal party's dirty-tricks department. Well, Good Riddance, John Howard, hopefully.

Re: Melbourne Cup by Ellerd on 2 December 2007 8:30am

Yep, Howard lost Bennelong - only the second time in history a sitting PM has lost his own seat. It's probably best for his constituents anyway - no way would John Howard, having served as Prime Minister for nearly 12 years, sit on the opposition backbenches for the next three.

Deeply satisfying about Howard, Ellerd. Maybe an ex-Union leader as head of the Liberal Party might mean it isn't QUITE so right wing

Au contraire. I was merely pointing out that Kevin Rudd is the first world leader to be called Kevin.
