54 centimetres in 30 hours.

Some years the snow is negligible on the east side of Vancouver Island. Some years a guy spends all his energy digging out.

That's 21 inches in a very short time.

40 cm?! You lucky people! We have only ten at the moment and I have a feeling it will melt away very soon.

Nothing lucky about that much snow, elina. Not if you are a driver in a town that requires you to drive. The shovelling of my driveway is more work than I want!

Hey, if keep the cupboards full and the firewood pile large I can live a week or more without going anywhere, so it isn't THAT bad!

I LOOOOOVE snow! We don't have any right now, though we'll get a coating tonight. Rain will wash it away tomorrow, though.

We had a blizzard in 1978 that dropped 4 FEET and 2 inches of snow in about 36 hours! For those on the metric system, that's 1.32 meters. It was so much fun: thunder, lightning, 65 MPH winds, zero visibility. I took a walk in it after dark--I just couldn't resist being part of it. It took us a week to dig out. I love wild weather!

A snowfall that shuts down the city is fun...if you have no emergency.

In Victoria at the south end of our island, we had a similar 1 metre snowfall in 36 hours that collapsed roofs and changed life in that city. Emergency routes were cleared and a few guys were driving. It brought the people together, helping one another.

If you pay my flight, I can come to shovel it for you anytime, my favourite winter pastime activity (at home in Rovaniemi at least, can't do it here at the school area).

We used to have a lot of snow still ten years ago. Now, thanks to global warming, we are very lucky to have a white Christmas. I am very hopeful, I can't imagine having a black Christmas instead, not in Lapland.

My husband and I vacationed on Vancouver Island in the early 90s, and we loved it! Spent some time in Victoria--we loved the museum and having tea at the Empress Hotel. We drove up the coast and stayed in Nanaimo and Uclulet and did some hiking in Strathcona Park. One of my favorite vacations, by far!

The blizzard of 78 came together extremely fast and caught everyone off guard. Two weather systems converged to make a storm with hurricane-like intensity. It even had an eye and the counter-clockwise rotation. A few people died in their cars after being stranded on the interstate (CO poisoning after snow covered the tailpipe). A few people were swept off seawalls when they foolishly tempted fate. But there was remarkably little loss of life for such a huge storm.

There was a video clip of a house collapsing into the ocean that was played over and over again on the news. It happened to be the house a coworker was renting. She'd had to evacuate without her cat (couldn't find him), and when she saw the house go down, she assumed he was gone. But who should come sauntering back into her path 6 weeks later but the kitty! In good health and very glad to see mom again. Mom was only there by chance--visiting the site of her former home.

Snow is beautiful! In pictures, on postcards, on ski hills. I hate it too.

Can you send some over here, Pete?

I'll water my drought-stricken garden with it.
