Pound Cake Speech. by tucsonmike on 12 April 2008 6:49am

This was given by comedian Bill Cosby in May, 2004.
I posted this because Mr. Palin is interested in social issues (even though it is unique to the United States).

I am curious to hear non American viewpoints. I thought about the speech because it was in this month's Atlantic Monthly.

The Speech was to an NAACP awards dinner If I were African-American, many other African Americans would be pissed for me posting this.
Now, I am going to ask my friend Rita's opinion...

Fine ideals, but a bit inchoate. How exactly does he propose to effect the changes he wants?

(A lot of what he's saying applies to UK as well, of course, but I don't think a publicly known person in UK would urge religious groypings to Go Out And Do Something)

And what is a Pound Cake Speech, Mike?

Bill Cosby has been accused (by extremely reactionary people IMO) of being a self-hating African American man for these comments. I disagree.

I think about the unjust persecution of my people over THOUSANDS of years, WORLDWIDE, and yet we seem to get on with life. Perhaps BECAUSE we appreciate every bit of freedom, liberty and human rights that come our way. It makes me wonder why other ethnic groups - all ethnic groups, not just one - seem to embrace their own victimization, wallow in their own inertia, and go generation after generation like that.

Okay, go ahead, attack me now! But then you may also have to attack our beloved Barack Obama because he frequently espouses the same message as Bill Cosby.

Linda, it is called the Pound Cake Speech, because Mr. Cosby mentioned stealing a pound cake and getting shot by police for it as an example of stupidity.

I feel Bill Cosby is sending just exactly the right message to those whom he has directed it. His words need to be heard, whether they accept the truth of not. Liker ostriches, some people like to bury their heads in the sand. Accept the truth and get on with it.

I've loved what Bill Cosby has been expressing in his speeches that I have heard in the past few years. I think it's just common sense and he's really sending the right message to his people. It has nothing to do with hating your own race.

Admire Mr. Cosby's courage and the speech really does speak to all adults being responsible for all young people.

The Atlantic article explains more the philosophical dialog within the African American community.

I have already been asked, "why are you interested in this, it does not concern you?"

WEll, it should concern all of us, as you clearly realise, Mike.

I don't know much about Bill Cosby, but he does sound a good person & I bet he backs up his views with money aimed in the right direction, too.
