Tim Winton: searching for a book title by Rox on 23 May 2008 3:44pm

Hello...ages ago I posted an article from Michael, with regard to his experiences and observations during his book signing tour in Australia. He mentioned a book by Tim Winton, which Michael read in flight to the Eastern States. Wondering if anyone may remember the book title, please :) Tim Winton is a fantastic writer :)

I think it must be BREATH, published (in paperback? by Picador @ £14.99.

Just read a very admiring newspaper review (The Independent) - serendipity or what?

(About surfing in the Margaret River area)

Thanks very much Linda. Breath has just been released though, so am thinking it may have been Dirt Music ? I live in the Margaret River area - the township of Margaret River is a 20 minute drive from my home - certainly is a very special place to be :)

You're welcome, Rox - check it out on Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com? Might be a review you might remember the theme from?

Anywhere where surfing is, sounds great. It's even big in my home-town on the coast of north-east England - and it's bloody freezing there!

Good luck with Tim Winton.

Hi Linda
I found a couple of links to our local and Western Australa Surf Cams:
Local:
http://www.yallingupbeach.com.au/pages/surfcam.htm

Western Australia
http://www.srosurf.com/index.shtml

Across Australia
http://www.coastalwatch.com/camera/cameras_large.aspx?cam=7000&;state=WA

I go to Smiths Beach (Yallingup) on a regular basis - but I don't surf, I was always "dumped" in the waves, and I chickened out !!! Margaret River, whilst a famous name for a surf break is actually a town, 10 k's inland from the ocean. The Margaret River runs through it, making it's way to the ocean at Prevelly Park and it is here, in Prevelly Park where you'll find the famous surf break. MP went to Margaret River 5 years while taking a break from the Himilaya book launch.
I googled Saltburn Surf School in NE England and saw some really nice surf pics !

Thanks, Rox. Surf.com/index looked a very good website - I must say, whenever I've been able to access Australian websites, they're good, quick & efficent.

Saltburn, i know - but Tynemouth, further up the coast towards Scotland, is my hometown & surfing must contribute to the tourist economy.

What do you do then if you don't surf? Swim? (I think that's brave enough, I stick to the pool these days...)

Yep I swim and run and jog and dive and dream, dream dream of doing all of those things.......but I do walk along the beaches and I love the scenery...I was glad you introduced me to Tynemouth and the NE of England........looks rugged and imagine you would have lots of seabirds up there.....PUFFINS ???

Re: Tim Winton: searching for a book title by geordiegirl on 30 May 2008 5:47pm

Not in Tynemouth - much - but investigate LINDISFARNE ISLAND and you will see sea-birds in HUGE quantities (their booklet about the island has silly great puffins on the front cover, in full colour)- when visiting we occasionally do the boat-trips to see the seals & sea-birds.

Oh Rox you're just reminding me I'm in exile from the sea-coast & like you I just LOVE walking along any part of it...most recently in Margate, flat & sandy, I prefer that (well I guess a beach wouldn't be hilly, DOH!)

I hope you get lots of opportunities to do just that,Rox.

Oh I'm sure you will, Rox. Without wanting to sound trite, that's what this site is about - giving each other good travel ideas!
