HA HA! You wouldn't believe the line at the 7-11 when the shuttles pull up to pump gas!

According to Engineer Tony Bruins at JSC: "Liquid oxygen is used as Shuttle fuel. The space shuttle main engines use Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen. The solid rocket boosters use a solid fuel similar to that used in model rockets or fire crackers. The engines the space shuttle uses to move around in space use Nitrogen Tetroxide and Monomethyl Hydrazine. These fuels are very dangerous, and they ignite on contact with each other (this type of fuel is necessary because there's no oxygen in space to burn other fuels)."

According to NASA: "The propellant mixture in each SRB motor consists of an ammonium perchlorate (oxidizer, 69.6 percent by weight), aluminum (fuel, 16 percent), iron oxide (a catalyst, 0.4 percent), a polymer (a binder that holds the mixture together, 12.04 percent), and an epoxy curing agent (1.96 percent)."

The solid fuel is the consistency of a gum eraser.

The solid rocket boosters are the white ones on the sides. They are jettisoned as soon as the solid fuel burns off and retrieved from the ocean after each launch. BEFORE 9/11 i.e. the Good Old Days, the public could call the Army Corps harbormaster and find out when the boosters were being towed through the lock at the seaport, and then go watch from a few yards away.

It's so bloody hot today. I'm watching it on our local cable channel. ":^) That's the sweat on my forehead.

Thanks for the info about the fuel! Frightening stuff.

Good luck to the astronauts.
