Rare sight at Cape Canaveral by canaveralgumby on 20 September 2008 2:53pm

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/080919-sts125-rescuerollout.html

For those who don't feel like going the link, we have TWO shuttles on adjacent launch pads at the same time. Atlantis is going to do the last ever maintenance on the Hubble. It will be no where near the International Space Station. If Atlantis becomes disabled or damaged to where it cannot return, then we will launch Endeavor to retrieve the Atlantis crew.

Up until now, only in the movies! Chances are SLIM that a rescue mission will be needed, but just in case.....

As someone who has on one occasion seen the shuttle on the launch pad and another occasion seen it on its slow journey to the pad, (as well as being at the right place at the right time when they unveiled Alan Shepherd's statue) I was interested to read this, thank you Cori for posting the link.

Haven't seen one go up yet but there's still hope!!!

Annie ;)

I'd have to pay the Visitor Complex admission plus an extra $21 to go on the guided tour which gets you closer to the launch pads, even though not CLOSE.

How much is the photo worth to me? I have 15% of an MRI to pay off, we are doing home repair, my dog's going in for surgery Tuesday...

But I WANNA GO TO SEE THE SHUTTLES! (pouts lips and stamps feet).

Hey Trekker! How's your agricultural project going?

I've seen shuttles land a half dozen times but haven't yet seen a launch. I definitely need to find a way to see a launch. I may end up wanting to camp in your backyard someday soon, Cori.

You have to pay for guided tours now?!!! I did a series of docs with NASA back in the 80's and it was absolutely amazing how NASA would bend over backwards to accommodate the public. They never charged for anything back then.

Awww. Cori, I'm still working on my outside gardening. But I'm hoping to have the jam to make a greenhouse over the winter. After that maybe an indoor garden.

I've learned one more reason to have a greenhouse and ultimately an indoor garden. I love using fresh basil on many different food items. And having it right outside my door is excellent. Do you guys grow basil? What edibles do you grow?

sighthound (hi! BTW) NASA facilities are considered symbolic terrorist targets. We USED to be able to drive up pretty darn close.
