OBAMA WINS!!!! by Marianne on 5 November 2008 4:16am

We did it!!!

Not to make a speech, but, I am so overwhelmed this evening. I am bursting with pride in our country for the first time in a long time.

Obama is the President-Elect of the US! As an African American, I cannot tell you what this means to me and my family. For so long, minorities in the US have not felt like legitimat citizens and we have just taken a huge step to healing some of the atrocities perpetrated on all minorities in the US, from Native Americans to Blacks, Latinos and so on. We have a voice once again and this time he is the leader of his country. He will be a President for all and will be a bridge to bringing us all together, to stand as one. As a Chicago native, I am very proud tonight!

Dr. King, your dream is realized!

High fives to you, Marianne! As a minority in North Carolina since I'm a liberal, I'm so happy that underdogs of all kinds can celebrate tonight.

I'm just incredibly happy and in awe that less than a century ago we ladies didn't have the vote. Am I glad we do now!

I'm not only crying but I feel like I've woken up from an eight-year nightmare. And the most amazing thing, in a country that has for decades had very few people vote, so many people waited so long in endless lines to cast their votes. Democracy has really returned to America!

There was an amazing NPR (radio) program today with people in voting lines all over the country being interviewed, people of all ages, ethnicities and political persuasions. Some had been waiting for 8 hours. And, after this, the most acrimonious campaign I've ever witnessed, everyone was incredibly civil, sharing food, music and reading material during the wait. There was one especially amazing story of a woman in Santa Monica, CA who had gone into labor and her doctor told her to go immediately to the hospital but she insisted on voting first. They rushed her to the front of the line then rushed her to the hospital. Hope she names the kid Barack.

The bad news is that yesterday I heard the first of the speculation about the 2012 election,

My heart is so full tonight, that 2012 is a very distant thought to me. I can only think about now.

I have a 3year old biracial son (caucasian/black). Tonight, as I helped him put on his pajamas, I asked him something that I've waited to say my whole life and when I did say it, I wanted it to be true. I asked him if he knew that one day he could be President? He smiled and said "Yes, Mommy."

Congratulations to President Elect Obama. Y'all, who have known me for a while, read my skepticism. Tonight's speech in Grant Park inspired me.

I can only feel hope. If he turns out to be a great President, I will make sure to work to make sure he is reelected.

I can only feel hope.
