Can you tell me anything about Rammstein? by canaveralgumby on 14 November 2008 3:19pm

Hi everyone. We found out Wednesday that my son in the US Air Force is being transferred to Rammstein AFB, Germany, in February '09. He will probably finish out the 2 1/2 to 3 years remaining in his current enlistment there.

He is definitely a type-B personality, not adventurous, and I think when he requested that he "get the hell out of Dodge" (i.e. San Antonio, Texas, USA) he was hoping they'd send him to North Dakota or California or, best case, back here to Florida.

So right now he's a bit nervous. I could not be happier or more excited! His father and I feel that this is exactly the kind of life experience he needs! Get a Europass... We just don't TELL him that.

So, does anyone have any information about Rammstein, the AFB or the city? Thanks! -- Cori

I'm sure bIG bLOGGER will google it for you Cori, so I won't bother.
Travel will do him good, I've never visited Germany but my daughter has and she loved it.

Ha ha! I can Google it myself. I've already looked at the AF official website, where I've just learned how to SPELL it, for instance (one "m"). I am really looking for personal, qualitative feedback!

I've been to Germany many many times, but not to Ramstein. Sorry. All I know is that it's the main stop for servicemen before and after serving or escaping zones of conflict and for the wounded to meet their parents when they are flown over to see them. Also, other Americans, civilians included, who have been caught up in the conflicts of the world and later released (in the case of kidnappinggs), usually stop there first before heading for the USA. It's a major base for rehab and preparing for deployment before setting off to other regions. I honestly don't know in which part of Germany Ramstein is located. But to be honest, Germany has so much to offer that I can't imagine your son getting bored. He just has to take a little initiative. Most American soldiers and their families love it there. Germany being very centrally located, gives him a great opportunity to travel in any direction to find an abundance of things to learn and places to see. I certainly hope he's outgoing enough to give it a go. If he hooks up with some buddies, new or old, maybe they can convince him to be adventurous. He'll regret it if he doesn't take advantage of this opportunity, compliments of Uncle Sam.

Ramstein US Army base is in the Rheinland-Pfalz region of West Germany at Kaiserslautern,pop.100,000 inhabitants, plus another 48,000 military personnel,so it's a pretty large base. Apart from that,I would say that Patty's description (above) tells you all there is to know about Ramstein, and sounds correct to me so well done patty.
