Volcano alert!! by mrsteabag on 23 March 2009 3:32pm
Mt. Rideout, located 100 miles SW of Anchorage, AK, erupted 5 times last night. It's a mess and has potential to be an even bigger one because the debris has been falling on snow cover. Yikes! Missy, Kaz, sorry about anything that drifts your way. You guys have suffered enough and it's only March.

Australia's a long way from Alaska, isn't it?

Pete lives closer than Kaz and Missy. Keep us posted,
Lava Trekker.

Ohh a volcano? I'm going to search for some images.
Once I flew over an erupting volcano at night, it was somewhere around Turkey (not sure of the precise location, it was before you had those little computers in the back of your seat that plotted your exact location) .
It was amazing, never forgotten the image of that.

For those who are interested, here's the Anchorage Daily New's: Mt Rideout article........

Stories about Mt Redoubt's activities only tell about the ash causing air traffic problems and some issues on the ground. It seems highly unlikely we in British Columbia will be affected.

When Mt St Helens blew no-one up here new until seeing the news. No ash clouded the sky or fell onto us. Mt Redoubt is much further away than St Helen's. Don't fly over Alaska.

Maybe the wind was blowing eastward, Pete! lol. ;)

I had a friend in college who flew to Washington state JUST to collect the ash and ship it home. He was a potter, and he had some use for it. Glaze, I think. He also brought back some gems made by the volcanic heat and forces--hitherto unseen by human eyes. They were gorgeous.

Pete, I didn't mean to neglect you. It just seems as if Australia's been getting beaten up a lot this year.
I saw a ceramic musicbox glazed with Mt. St. Helens ash. It twirled and played "On Top of Old Smokey." And I have a t-shirt with ash in the transfer.
