One billion not served by mrsteabag on 19 June 2009 7:06pm

This makes me heartsick. Made my midday stop at BBC.co.uk...it reported that over a billion people are going hungry. Mr. Teabag and I contribute to Northern Illinois Food Bank and a couple of other releif agencies. Is it that there isn't enough food? Or issues with distribution? Both? It's the one global issue that keeps me up at night.

You can't bleed for the world, Fran. We contribute through our writers chapter to the local food bank. Fewer starve than before, but it is a complex issue.

How about writing a letter about this discrepancy to President Obama,Fran?

Pamela Anderson has already got there first, but I think coming from a proper academic like yourself, your letter would carry more weight.

It's mostly distribution, I think. We throw away so much perfectly good food in this country, while others are starving to death. Approximately two thirds of the world is either dying from hunger or suffering from long-term malnutrition, while people in industrialized nations are battling obesity and trying to figure out where to put all the food they waste.

But we can't just ship it over to Africa or Asia, can we? Eating less won't reduce our production, either, because that's not just a simple supply-demand relationship. There's a lot of government nonsense regarding farms and food production facilities having to produce certain amounts whether they'll actually be consumed or not.

As Mike said, a complicated situation.

Well, bIG, I shot President Obama an email yesterday. I'm also bothered by the government subsidizing soy and corn--two ingredients folded, spindled and mutilated into junk food of all kinds, made into cereal of marginally nurtitious value, etc. Ick. Why not fresh produce?

mrsteabag: I had to read that twice! On first reading I thought it read "I shot President Obama yesterday." :)
BTW: I with you all the way on fresh produce. I try to avoid all junk foods because they are exactly that and serve no one's interests well.
