Mr. Palin, Why Amtrak Does not Work. by tucsonmike on 16 December 2010 11:54pm

Because Mr. P is a train buff, I thought I would throw this in.
I read this recently. The reason why Amtrak and high speed rail have so much trouble in the United States.
Most Americans will never ride on a passenger train. They see taxes for Amtrak as subsidizing rich Northeastern business people.

BINGBINGBING! The cigar goes to the man in the red suspenders!
I've been on Amtrak. I've been on VIA rail in Canada. VIA is a lot cleaner and more efficient. While Amtrak has its charms, I've also had many trips where the toilet got flooded :P, we were three hours late due to having to share tracks with the other railroads, and really bad coffee! FEH!

I've done some online shopping for railway holidays in North America. I have looked for lines like those in India, the Orient express etc.

The trips I have found appear to attempt to get passsengers to their destination in as short a time as they can. Speed, getting there faster, is not the reason I am looking at train trips.

The run closest to me leaves Seattle and arrives in a California town 32 hours later. That's too fast! After looking some more, I found CP Rail excursions that look like a lot of fun including hotel stays, bus tours, float plane tours and a train ride through the Rocky Mountains between BC and Alberta. All this for $7-8000 CAN plus taxes for 5-6 nights. A little rich for me, and I need to go south where it is warmer.

I travelled from BC to Quebec, about 2500 miles, by rail over four nights as a teenager and I won't forget it. What a great way to travel. I've been looking at this site: http://www.railsnw.com/tours/rcp/tour1.htm#rcp
