Proposed tax on Chocolate? NOOOOOO!! by Spursfan2 on 26 August 2011 11:49am

I was watching the TV news this morning and apparently a high proportion of the UK population will be obese in 20 years. An 'expert' was on, saying that they were advising the government to put a tax on junk food, and he specified chocolate.

He was saying that chocolate contains no nutrients (doesn't milk choc contain calcium for a start?!) and that if it was taxed, people would be less likely to buy it and would also think about its nutritional value or lack of.

How patronising!! If I eat a choc bar, I know it isn't particularly good for me, I also don't think it is too bad for me either in moderation!!

Oh it has made me sooo cross! Not just because it is chocolate, but because the way he was talking was so patronising!! Obviously we are all morons who just eat ANY rubbish as long as it tastes good. Pah!

Here's a bit on the papers about it, but it was this guy's attitude that got to me!! Oh - and the first photo is NOT me hahaha!!!

:D

Ah, yes, "nanny state" arrogance is personified by this guy who is obviously trying to make a name for himself.

Chocolate, dark chocolate, has proven benefits for heart health (and certainly produces an improved mental state.) I always keep a bar of Scharffenberger 70% cacao on hand. One small bite of that keeps all my cravings at bay.

It's also been proved that chocolate is supposedly good for you. AndI've been having chocolate for years and I'm quite slim, and it has never harmed me, same with ice-cream, so using chocolate as the scapegoat is ridiculous! I'm with you guys entirely! UP WITH CHOCOLATE!!!

Chocolate tax? How dare he! I agree, very patronising! What about other things that are not good for you - fast food, i.e. hamburgers, pizza, etc. etc.

I think they are thinking about that too, Sue! He just concentrated on chocolate. Of course it will never happen - there'd be uproar!!

Oh Mike can I lead the revolution? I DID used to own a copy of the Anarchists Cookbook in the very early '70s so I feel qualified. [confistcated by the fuzz but that's ANOTHER story...]

:D

They have taxed cigarettes and alcohol to the hilt here (doesn't bother me I use neither) and its made no difference, people still buy them as before.
Chocolate tax...pffffffffft...morons! Now where's my creme egg? ;)

I hope they don't tax pictures and videos of creme eggs!

They might do, Loretto, to stop people looking at them and being tempted to buy chocolate! LOL.
