Another Loretto Question. by tucsonmike on 9 January 2013 1:10am

I am plotting something for a short story.

Will be a ways down the road, cause of the two biographies I am working on. What are the stereotypes Irish people have toward people from Galway and people from Donegal? Thanx.

Donegal is part of Ulster and Galway is in one of the other three (Munster, Leinster and Connaught). I've never heard of Irish folk stereotyping each other although there is good friendly rivalry when Ulster play Munster, Leinster or Connaught at the rugby. Ulster are doing well in a bigger competition at the moment.

People from Galway are / used to be called "herring chokers" and people from Tipperary are called "stone throwers" Dubliners are called Jackeens, people from Cavan are said to be tight with their money. People from Sligo/ Leitrim are bogtrottets, people from cork are "cute hoors" (whores) people from Offaly are BIFFOS (google it) and Donegal people ? Not a clue mike. Hope this helps!

Oh here ya go.

Very impressed that they got Tipp and Galway right. And Donegal people are called The Herring Gutters, not too far removed from Herring Chokers.

Thanks Loretto. I was asking because of something I read in the T.J. English book Paddywhacked (the history of Irish Organized crime in America). When describing Boston, he was describing the difference between South Boston and Charlestown. He said Southie was settled by people from Galway and Charlestown by people from a particular bandit area of Donegal.
