Wheelrim has itchy feet... by Wheelrim on 9 January 2013 10:59am

Ok, we have been in Spain now for over a year, and nice as it is we feel the need for another journey. We looked on the `Round the World` Air ticket deals and they have a great one that goes, UK-India-(overland then to Nepal/Sri Lanka) then flight to Hanoi/Saigon (overland then to Bangkok) then flight from BK to Bali, Then to Australia, then New Zealand, then to Fiji or Cook Islands or Tahiti, then fly to LA and then back to UK from either, LA, San Francisco, NY Or Vegas. Price? £1399. Ticket lasts one year . We thought a year was not enough time for all those places so have opted for the `smaller` ticket of UK-Bangkok-NZ-Australia-Singapore then UK. We are looking at 7 months starting in June, we will be in Oz for Nov/Dec to watch and help out with our friends Sheep Shearing on their 25000 acre farm just north of Deniliquin NSW. If anyone has got any tips for `must-see/must do` in Thailand Malaysia or New Zealand I would love to hear it. Gotta get that Tan worked on now and dig out those hippy beads....should I grow a Goatee?

Great trip you and your bride are planning, Wheels! Look at this site:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/

where you can hear what other people have to say about the area you would be going to next. Hotel ratings, must sees and photos can help you narrow down your options, then look at the forums to hear what others saw, did and experienced, good and bad.

Is there advice on Tripadvisor on sporting a Goatee?

You should buy yourself an old pickup truck, and get a goatee and mullet combo like this one:

Wheels, I think I speak for all members who aren't as well set up as you; who may never go on a voyage with such broad variety of destinations and cultures; whose relative lack of charm and wit may not serve us as well as yours: please take good notes, many photos and videos, and please share them with us!

Many might think I have a money tree in the back garden, you could not be further from the truth. Shirl and I travel on the meanest budget possible, and when I say meanest...I mean it. On this occasion we are digging into our savings for the tickets, the ones we are after will be a little cheaper than the Big-Trip one mentioned. First stop, BK will be in a Backpackers for 5-6 days, then we will find cheap beach front accomodation through friends in Thailand and Malaysia and travelling by public transport. food is cheap everywhere. We have friends in NZ but we do NOT at all like putting on people and WE tolerate it for 1, 2, 3 nights at the most before finding our own shack somewhere. We are very laid-back `rough-it` travellers. Having driven UK-AUS in an old van and driving twice round Oz in some very non luxurious vans we are used to it,(There are few luxury stops in the middle of Iran or Pakistan anyway). We feel very lucky to have fresh water and shelter. In Oz we have our friends farm to stop on, its in the middle of nowhere, really. There is no-one permenant there and the nearest neighbour is 90km away. just us. That, to us is great, its so different. silence, big skies, walk around naked! If there is a way of showing you good people just a dozen photos of how we travel, I will. If I can do it on little money, you guys can, and I hope you do. My thoughts are.. If you dont do it this time, when will you do it? I asked a couple of years ago if anyone had the DVD or a copy of the TV series, with Simon Dring, `On The Road Again`. its inspirational and a great watch. I have already put an Ad on `Gumtree` in Australia to House-Sit properties should the farm be unavailable. With this Internet thing its so easy to plan ahead. There is also a site where you can re-locate Motorhomes for free, in USA, NZ,OZ and CANADA. Its there for the asking. Buy a backpack guys, you are never too old, or too poor. The only thing that can hold you back is if you are too ill, nine times out of ten that is not your fault. So, we do these things before we are caught out by health problems. Thanks for your interesting comments. Wheels.
