No soap!? - New Competition. by Ken Dunn on 14 May 2014 1:48pm

I got some shower gel today. Which of the following ingredients is soap?

Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Parfum, Citrus Aurantifola Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Triethylene Glycol, Benzyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Magnesium Nitrate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazolinone, Citral, Limonene, Geraniol, Cl 42090, Cl 19140.

My spell checker doesn't recognize 10 of the items!

Here are a few clues:
1) Aqua looks like a fancy name for water.
2) Sodium Chloride is salt.
3) Parfum looks like the French spelling for perfume.
4) I don't know the answer to the question.
5) Cl 42090 is probably a colouring.

All * have been removed as all the ingredients have been identified. 23 May 2014.

I don't know the answer but I thought shower gels were soap-free. The one I use is anyway, so it says on the label!

Soap is made from fatty substances.

Sodium laureth sulphate is a foaming agent and is used in shampoo, toothpaste, shower gels, etc. I presume it is in soap as well.

Follow Up Competition. Identify the purpose of any of the listed ingredients.

Suzulu has 1 point.

The competition winner will be the person who ends up with most points. 3 of the clues given in the first post cannot be used.

Glycerin: When properly formulated, glycerin shores up the skinís natural protection by filling in the area known as the intercellular matrix and by attracting just the right amount of water to maintain the skinís homeostasis.

http://www.paulaschoice.com/cosmetic-ingredient-dictionary/definition/glycerin

From the same document, pure glycerin is a 'humectant' drawing water out of your skin and can actually be harmful.

Magnesium Chloride is supposed to be beneficial to the body, either used on the skin or taken orally. Of course, would not advise drinking the shower gel. LOL! Taken orally, it is good for the digestion.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is a surfactant from coconut oil - this lowers the surface tension of water.

Potassium Sorbate is a preservative.

Triethylene Glycol is used as a mild disinfectant

Citrus Aurantifola Extract (lime) - gives a citrus smell

Methylchloroisothiazolinone is a preservative, flagged up last year by the British Association of Dermatologists researching an 'epidemic' of contact dermatitis.

5 points to SF2 unless anyone challenges your answers but they seem fine to me. I'm glad I haven't used it yet. Because of your Methylchlor...linone description I'll use a bit less just incase I react to it.

Running Scores :
Spursfan2......... 5
suzulu.............. 2
Lounge Trekker 1

There are still 12 to identify* so the competition is still winable by a new entrant. If anyone gets to a score greater that the remaining number to be identified the winner will be declared.

Any suggestions for a prize? How about a free tube of shower gel?!
