Your football club? by Ganesh on 14 November 2014 8:48pm

Hi there...

I read in Wikipedia yesterday that Michael Palin grew up supporting Sheffield United Football Club.

I'm a football fan myself and I am worried about the possibility of Ched Evans coming back into the football world. As you probably know, Ched Evans was convicted of rape in a court of law in 2012 and has recently been released from prison after serving half of his five- year sentence. He's now seeking to return to football, and Sheffield United has offered him their training facilities in order to help him regain match fitness.

Wouldn't it be great if Michael could use his influence as a widely admired and well liked famous personality to try and persuade the club he supports -or, at least, supported in his youth!- to change their behaviour towards Ched Evans? And, importantly, wouldn't it be a good thing if Michael could do whatever he could to influence the club into not renewing his contract?

Today, olympic athlete Jessica Ennis, also a Sheffield United supporter who has one of the stands at Bramall Lane named after her, has publicly denounced the club and asked to have her name removed. It can only be a good thing if more public figures connected with Sheffield United are prepared to put pressure on the club.

This is not a witch hunt. What is important is that a convicted rapist should not be given the opportunity to become a role model for young men. Help him get a job, by all means. But not a job in the limelight. That would belittle the suffering of all rape victims.

So, I hope Michael can find the inclination and the time to add his small grain of sand. And put some private - and/or public?- pressure on his club.
