Chicken diapers by ev on 15 February 2015 11:36am

Hi folks.. sorry for not being around at Christmas and New Year to share the traditional Palin's Travels season's greetings..

To make up for it, here's an article about chicken diapers, for those of you with pet chickens..:

Arrrghhhh! I guess I'll never cease to be amazed at how stupid people are about animals and also as to the lengths other people will go to exploit that stupidity.

Now, presumably, these are urban chickens who are being kept for their eggs. Diapers will get the eggs absolutely smeared with feces and cleaning the eggs will distribute the crap even further.

When I lived in Sacramento, we had to work for five years to get the City Council to make keeping a few chickens legal in the city. There was a wonderful episode of the Martha Stewart Show about Manhattan chickens that finally convinced the Council that having chickens wasn't totally weird and the law was changed so we could keep 3 hens but with a lengthy and absolutely stupid list of requirements. Thank God, these diapers weren't around then or I'm sure that the City would have required them. (grumble, grumble, grumble)

BTW, properly composted, chicken crap makes absolutely great fertilizer for the garden. The three hens I brought here from Sacramento and their bedding are turning bits of this desert soil fertile. Going to get a few more chicks later this spring. Fresh eggs are so much tastier and more nutritious than store-bought ones, especially if you don't refrigerate them which you don't have to do if you don't wash them until you use them. I love my chickens and could wax poetic about them forever.

Actually, those chicken diapers seem quite cruel. Poor chickens :)
