I'm going to move to New Mexico in mid-May. Any Palinites live there? I'm really looking forward to it. It's a gorgeous state.

I used to have a penpal there when I was in my early teens! I think the town where she lived was called Lovington.

Good luck with your move!

New Mexico is a US state that has confused me. Does it border Texas and (old) Mexico? Is that the first state along which Mr Trump is planning to build his border wall thing? Perhaps it's already there.

NM borders Texas, Colorado, Arizona, a little bit of Oklahoma and, of course, Mexico. There is a place in the north west called Four Corners where you can stand in four states all at once - NM, AZ, CO and Utah. I used to travel a lot with my parents when I was a kid and I can't even guess how many pictures they took of me standing in those four states. (You sometimes have to stand in line to do it.)

Not only is the land extremely varied and beautiful, there is an intense art world there. Santa Fe is the second biggest art market in the US right after New York. Of course, there are numerous memorials and a museum to Georgia O'Keeffe but I love the Native American art more.

I'm hoping to get back into spinning and weaving which is how I made my living about three decades ago. Once a year there is a fair in Taos (Google the place! The church there is almost enough to get me to turn Catholic again.) where all the weavers come off the Navaho reservation to sell their most incredibly gorgeous rugs! NOT to be missed if you are travelling in the US at Taos fair time.

P.S. Ken, don't get me talking about "the wall". My keyboard will burst into flames.

Along with your information above and the Google information I found, it is a beautiful place. Are you retiring there? (There, your keyboard is safe - we just have to hope no one else asks about "the wall"! Watch for johnnythemonkey perhaps coming back and asking!?)

I've been retired for a few years now and, through a series of unfortunate events, found myself mired in the middle of the Mojave desert with nothing interesting to do. The husband of my friend in NM died a few years ago and we've both decided that we're tired of living alone. Our dogs (salukis) are all related so she's family. We've known each other for 40 years so, hopefully, we know each other well enough by now to make the living arrangement work out. She's a dog show judge, is the rep for the saluki breed for the American Kennel Club and teaches agility and other canine classes. I hope to start doing therapy dog work again which is so rewarding. Dogs are magic.

I'd totally forgotten about johnnythemonkey, Wonder who he's harassing now....

... I don't know but he'll probably have a couple of beers before doing so! Keep in touch about your move, sighthound.

Getting settled in New Mexico. I'm 30 miles East of Albuquerque, just on the other side of the Sandia Mountains where the red rocks geography turns into prairie. Really beautiful here and yesterday a road runner ran up to 3 feet from me and, yes, they are as funny as the cartoon bird.

I'm fairly sure I've heard mention of Albuquerque in an old western movie from years back. I saw a real photo of a roadrunner on a recent TV quiz and noticed that its general shape was as depicted in the cartoons but its feathering was totally different - more scraggy like.

Yes, they're scruffy. It adds to the funny quotient.
