The One Question I MUST ASK Michael !! by Diamond on 5 December 2003 9:39pm

'Why is it that webmaster doesnt archive our favourite painite threads and tidy up the chatterbox'

- how do we expect new people to the site to find the previous threads about meeting michael ?? there are now 22 Pages of threads and posts!!!!!!

I am so fed up with going down to the vaults - I had to go to page 8 to find some of the best threads!!!!!

I have only been asking on your behalf since MAY 03 - i think it is high time Michael knew !! I am sure i can find time to ask him if not once - twice as we are going to two book signings!! and then Michael can ask webmaster why he is being bothered by palinites who arent all that happy!!!

Lets get this sorted once and for all webmaster please

Lyn

Hello Diamond,

Thank you for your post regarding the archiving of the Chatter Box. We have noted your suggestion both this time and on previous occasions.

However, there are a number of other parts of the site that we are currently working on and this is limiting the amount of time we can devote to the Chatter Box. Other visitors to Palin's Travels have also made their own suggestions, and we try to respond to all equally.

The archiving of the Chatter Box also causes practical problems. Although you as an individual have a clear idea of what your personal favourite threads are, this may not represent every Palinite's opinion. And, in our role as Webmaster, it would not be fair to dictate just which threads should be archived and which should be kept current until we have everybody's feedback. As you will no doubt recall from our previous attempt to archive the Chatter Box, many people feel differently about which threads should be saved.

As your suggestion had not been echoed by many others we had not seen it as an immediate priority, but you can be confident that we are thinking about how best to restructure the Chatter Box. But, if you would like to speed this process up, you could start to ask other Palinites what their favourite threads are, and we can keep those current. It wouldn't be fair for us to simply archive the threads that you personally don't favour, nor would it be just for us to make the decision without all interested parties' input. So, if the current structure of the Chatter Box is frustrating you, please feel free to research exactly which threads should be kept current by asking everyone, and we will see what we can do once we have seen the results.

Sincerely,
Webmaster

At the risk of being controversial, here's my 'tuppence worth' about the Chatter Box...

Quite simply it might be a lot easier for Webmaster to deal with the Chatter Box if the sheer number of entries were reduced. Of course, everyone should have his/her right to 'blather on', but it annoys me when the Chatter Box turns into a form of chat room. For example (fictitious names used):

- Where's Susan?

- Don't know. Haven't seen her?

- Have you seen her, Peter?

- No, haven't seen her either. Claire was in earlier though. Maybe she's seen her.

- Yes I saw her, but she left before Peter arrived.

- Well if you see her again tell her I was looking for her.

- And me too.

- Creme Egg anyone?

Sorry for being cynical. But we do have to bear in mind that Palin's Travels is a free site - we can't expect Webmaster to bend over backwards to accomodate our every whim, especially when we could all tighten up on our postings and ease his/her burden.

Comments please...?

I saw Susan and Peter , both of them were walking down to the local shop , on their way to buy cream eggs, then I saw them walk back home again and they were discussing who is to blame for all the unimportant talk on threads in Palins????, beats me Tone any ideas????

Sorry Finnguy but we've heard all this before, who can say what and when , is there a rule in our Palins travels contract which says we must talk about nothing and no-one but the great man himself????????? if there is please point this out to me??? Peter and Susan would like to know this as well???....................

come on Finnguy...it's getting near Xmas, wheres your Christmas Spirit ??

PS ....yes although Palins IS a free site I do pay a large monthly contract to Telewest broadband, so it would be a shame to throw money away and not put in my rubbish threads.......
and as I am Scottish we have a healthy interest in using money wisely , lol...

Hi Phyll!

I entirely agree. I'm not saying that there should be a limit on what is discussed and when. That would be censorship, would it not? Indeed, the website affirms that 'Blathering On' is for "your views on Michael, travel, life, the universe and everything."

What I'm saying is, if people are going to complain to Webmaster about a lack of order in 'the vaults', then maybe we should all exercise a little discretion in what we do and don't post about. I'm sure this would make webbie's life a lot easier, as well as making it easier for us to find past threads.
