Travels in Algeria, Mali & Niger by nialltoubabou on 2 January 2003 8:49pm

The Sahara series reminds me of my own travels from Abidjan to Bamako to Algiers in 1981. I travelled up the Niger by ‘taxi-brousse’ to Djenne, Mopti & the Dogon country. The ferry to Timbuktu had been commandeered by the army so I didn’t make it. I crossed the desert from Agadez to Tamanrasset with a smuggler – bringing workers to the Algerian old fields. Then I spent some time in the Hoggar and stayed at the hermitage at Assekrem. Saw the sunrise and sunset – beautiful. I travelled northwards through Algeria stopping at Ghardaia and El Golea – two fascinating oases. It all took about 3 months.

Was it dangerous? Probably. But a lot of people get killed crossing the street.

I had a notebook and SLR camera to record my experiences. Now I am tempted to put up my own website.

I’d love to do the trip again – maybe see the rock drawings this time. Thanks for the series, Michael!
