What are the most scenic road trips in the UK? by djd on 16 September 2004 1:03am

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best and most scenic road trips in the UK? I've done the Great Ocean Road in Oz, and Pacific Highway in the States, so wondered if there's anything comparable to do here in the UK.

I agree with the A5 through Wales but in Scotland try the West coast starting in Helensburgh on the A814. Go North through Garelochhead to Arrochar and take the A83 over Rest an be Thankful to Inveraray. Then go North on the A819 through Glen Aray until you can turn right onto the A85. Turn left onto the B8074 through Glen Orchy to join the A82 heading North and stay on the A82 through Glen Coe to cross Loch Leven at Ballachulish. It is also possible to go round Loch Leven by road to North Ballachulish and from there back on to the A82 to finish in Fort William. On a good day from he right place you may get a view of Ben Nevis. A lot of other North West Scotland roads are as equally scenic as this route. Fort William to Kyle of Lochalsh or Inverness or Aviemore would be nice extensions to the route.

Try driving along the coastal round around Beachy Head and Seven Sisters...pretty views, though nothing quite up to Great Ocean Road standards. As for non-coastal routes you could always follow the old Roman Road through the Cotswolds stopping off at the various villages on the way, will be memorable after travelling the world twice I still found it heart warming to find a place in my own country that would rate in the top ten of my favourite places, not to mention most scenic places to visit - dont miss Bibury, Castle Coombe, Winchcombe, Belas Knapp, Bourton on the water, Upper and Lower Slaughter and Stow on the wold.

The A13 from Purfleet to Southend, through the stunning Thames Gateway!

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like I'll be heading off to Wales and Scotland then!

A5 is a good call, though also try the Oswestry to Aberystwyth route via Meifod on the A495. You can then go out to Llangurig and either up again or down through Mid/South Wales for a very sceanic journey

obviously im going 2 say this... what with it being my home and all but Derbyshire is truely beautiful! I cant think of anywhere in the UK i would rather be!

The foot hills of Snowdon are so isolated and beautiful, i spent a week there last year, there is nothing quite like it, you never see another car the whole time you are there. its a really romantic place in winter, i loved it!

have a nice time where ever you go

Em xx

I don't think you can beat the journey from Eskdale to Ambleside via the Hardnott and Wrynose passes. Very breathtaking!!

I agree with most others in this post!
I've recently come back from a holiday in North Wales and most of their roads are very scenic.
My favorites are the roads around the Snowdon and FFestiniog areas.
Even in the rain these roads are scenic!
