What are your favourite funny travel books? by honeycake on 27 September 2004 2:17pm

Besides reading Michael's hilarious travel books, I enjoy reading other witty books by travel writers. Ive particularly enjoyed books by Peter Kerr (love reading any book regarding starting a new life in Spain etc) and Ive just read "The Motorcycle Diaries" which is brilliant. Does anyone have any great recommendations for funny travel books for my future reading list?

thanks in advance for any help

My favourite travel books aside from Michael's are the three Fat Bulldog books by George Courtauld, which are very very funny and well-observed.

I'm just starting the Motorcycle Diaries - saw the film a couple of weeks ago and loved it.

The obvious name here is Bill Bryson, his humour is brilliant without ever being forced. Also Pete McCarthy (McCarthy's Bar, The Road to McCarthy) has a great way with words and a caustic wit.

Bill Bryson's books are great. My favourite is Notes From A Small Island.
He went on a tour of Britain before returning to the USA,and his writing is hilarious. I bought the book at Waterloo Station to read on the train, but I would have arrived home in tears of laughter,so I read the book at home with only my wife to annoy laughing!
