  The Chatter Box : Travel
Visit Kenya! by jay on 22 January 2003 5:04pm
My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Kenya in September 2002. If anyone is interested in travelling there there are superb hotels on the North Mombassa coastline for beach type relaxation, white sands and palm trees, warm Indian Ocean. Obviously you can't go all that way and just lounge about, so we went on a Safari inland into the Tsavo Game Reserve. The landscape and wildlife are amazing. You can sleep under the stars in tents (a couple we met did this... spent the night with a large dung beetle), or as we did stop in a 'Tree-Top' style hotel on stilts. The whole Safari experience is not to be missed, fantastic!.
The life style in Kenya is VERY basic for most people, rather a culture shock for first time visitors to Africa, but we met a couple who had visited Gambia the year before. They said it was a lot poorer! The Kenyan people are very freindly.. JAMBO! is THE word, everyone seems to say it to everyone all the time. Mombassa town is large and is mostly very poor. There are large Villa's with pools on the river bank and it's quite sad to see these as you look out across the waterway when there are people around you with absolutely nothing. And I mean nothing. Living on the street or in tin shacks. Some of the suburbs are in a similar state to those you see in the hills over Rio de Janeiro. No water supply, no gas, no electric, no drains... etc.. Amazingly all the people seem content and happy, everyone smiles all the time. If you've got virtually nothing, and neither has anyone else then why not smile, that seems to be the attitude. This is just one of the things that makes Kenya a wonderful, interesting, diverse and welcoming country in our experience.
