From UK withoput a plane? by robzrob on 11 November 2004 4:03pm

Has anybody ever set off to anywhere from the UK on a boat - for example, by enquiring at a town harbour, etc?

Possible. But the security situation at ports now in the UK regarding passengers on cargo ships, has dealt a massive blow to potential sailors i think. Or,to the other extreme it is said that many Captains are well away how romantic people think sea travel is. So they'll charge you big money to go on a boat. Much more than a flight cost. It's a real shame. In other parts of the world you can do it more easily though, and one journey i have in mind for the future, may involved a boat crossing between countries, similar to a Dhow.

We've ferried from Cairnryan to Larne and Dublin to Holyhead and have plans for Rosyth to Belgium in the near future. Also went to Germany from Scotland via the channel tunnel if that counts.
