Himalaya: another appreciation by Esitima on 10 January 2005 3:12pm

I think "Himalaya" is absolutely terrific. I have seen all the series and I want to say that all of them are excellent. What makes the series fantastic, this one included, apart from the wonderful locations, is the fact that Michael always makes sure the human side of his travels is present, like meeting the people, travelling with and interviewing local guides, I mean not necessarily expats but natives, plus of course his great sense of humour, things I think that lack in most of the travel-related TV productions. Even in places which could appropriately or not be called "hot spots" he tries to maintain the focus on human relations, turning the spotlight to the things that bring people together, the social practices, the dreams, the wishes we in Europe or the States or anywhere else share with other people on this planet, whatever their religion, the colour of their skin, their background...
It has always been important to travel that way and share these experiences with people who can't, but perhaps these last years have proved that it is even more important now than ever.
Respecting the peoples and the places we travel to, and keeping a good sense of humour all along the way (even though it's hard in certain circumstances) are the keys to opening many doors and make a wonderful journey. From what I can see here it looks like most of you fellow travellers do think that way too. I just want to say that I hope we'll meet somewhere along the way.
Cheers to all of you.
