Palin's letter by orlando on 10 January 2005 10:24pm

I just received Palin's letter about "need before greed" and it hit a chord as I am presently reading Sahara and loving it. I just can't believe how many people out there are happy with so little, and how much of a habit we've made it to consume (and consume and consume). I am particularly aware of this as I live in California, USA, where for the sake of appearance, people buy bigger and better only to find themselves complaining about the waste and the pollution. So, as Michael continues on his way around the Sahara waiting for that cold beer, I'm raising one to him and his resolution--let's change habits for the good of the global community, not just our own!
Cheers!

I also just read the letter, and i wholeheartedly agree. It makes me proud that the US has sent more troops to distribute food, build shelter and purify water that they have in Afghanistan. I think the quote that hit me the hardest was Kofi Annan when he said "where are all the people". The devestation is unbeleivable, and I agree with Michael Palin that we should give to smaller charities, most of the larger ones are so backlogged with organizing donations that more money right now will do little good.

In a year or so, I think we can all see that this disaster will have brought in, by far, more money and goods than another similar event in history. Right now I don't see any "compassion fatigue" setting in anytime soon. However I'm a little fearful though at some point it will and some of our local charities may suffer as a result. Some local events which sponsor such things as medical research may be squeezed out of existance for awhile. However, some other dubious causes need to out of existance, for good.
