South America, Dangerous? by lotte015 on 6 February 2005 9:59pm
We are traveling through the USA at the moment, and we are thinking of maybe going to south america too.
We are traveling in a rebuild bus.
Some people told us it would be dangerous to go to south america, is that true?

Obviously South America is a vast place. There are certainly areas in Bogota that I wouldn't want to drive through. However, there are so many great places to go and see that are on a well trodden tourist path it would certainly be an experience to remember. It's always worth keeping an eye on the foriegn office web site.

I have just been there and I had a truly great time. A lot of the people are very poor, but friendly. Learning a bit of Spanish certainly helps - hardly anyone speaks English. The roads are surprisingly good, at least in Peru.
Just keep your wits about you, don't carry large amounts of money obviously. Best wishes to you.

I have traveled through Venezuela, Brazil and Peru and never experienced any problems. Being able to speek some Spanish will help you greatly and just be smart when in large cities. Never be "flash with your cash" and always use your smile, even if your hot and bothered!
