Do anyone know any really good volunteer/intern organizations? (And perhaps without too hefty of a program fee?)

Re: Volunteer Organizations by Dunn.jh on 10 February 2005 4:42pm
it depends on how old you are?

What are you volunteering to do or hoping to learn?! There are tons of opportunities out there -- you just need to narrow your focus...

Have a butchers at www.gvi.co.uk - they have loads of brillant courses to suit everyone. I am going to South Africa July 2006 to become a Safari Guide - how cool is that?

Good luck!

STA Travel organises volunteer holidays in many different countries around the world. The trips range from 6 week stints to 6 months. Right now I have a friend in Ghana who is volunteering at a radio station in Accra, but you can also do things like teach English to orphans at schools in rural Thailand, join a street theatre group that performs to the poor and homeless in India, help out at an elephant conservation area in South-east Asia...there's lots to choose from. The fees change depending on what you do

Camps International in Kenya is fun and laid back - you work at a great primary school on all kinds of things, from teaching to brick laying. They run environment phases as well which in the past has been transfering elephants between parks, plus awesome diving, amazing safari and Kili or Mt Kenya if you fancy it. Check out the website www.campsinternational.com you can pick and choose how you want to spend your time.

You can try the classic route which is one of the overseas volunteering organisations:
VSO www.vso.org.uk/
Skillshare international
UN volunteers

They all need commitment of at least one year and a set of skills that are useful to the developing world.
Worth checking out if you feel you have suck skills and can make such a commitment
