Austrailia- Advice Please! by viv on 16 February 2005 11:09am

I'm considering living and working in Austrailia for a year. I will be travelling on my own and just wanted to know if anyone has done it and would you recommend I do it on my own. Thanks

A young relative of mine went to Australia last September to try to live and work in Australia but is coming home soon. I may get more details for you when she arrives.
Another young relative did go out a few years ago and is now married to an Australian girl.

If you're going solo and have no family nor familiar faces over there, it'll be tough, especially in your first week. However, hostels (I'm assuming that's where you'll be staying) are jam-packed with people in the same predicament and I'm sure you'll gradually develop some firm friendships.

If you need any advice on Oz (I did the working visa thing a few years ago), just holler.

Hi,

I have just spent 5 months working in Oz and I am now currently working in New Zealand. Firstly, you will not have any problems going on your own. Everybody vis great and so friendly and its almost better going on your own. If you do get Sydney, avoid Kingscross area on your at night, you may feel uneasy about that.
As soon as you get there get your tax file number, and you will find all hostels are very helpful regarding finding work. You can join a number of agencies doing office work, or you can join ranches that take you off into the back of beyond, but this is very, very hard work, long days with not much pay. But the experience will be worth it.

Go for it I had an ace time, and make sure you stay in Coogee, NSW and stay at Surfside. Thats where I worked and its a great place.

Cheers,

Jess
