Memories of Egypt by Katie J on 24 February 2005 1:42pm
I had the most amazing experience in Egypt a few years ago. We flew into Cairo and spent the obligatory two nights there seeing the Museum and its glitz and the pyramids (which were really close to the city - I found this very confusing, as I'd imagined they'd be deep in the desert!!)

We then flew onto Luxor which was great - a really busy, exciting and bustling place where we found our boats for the trip down the Nile.

On my boat there were only 12 of us and I have to say they were some of the most extraordinary people you could ever meet! The week's trip was a bit like the film 'Death on the Nile' (without the murder!) as each member of the party had their own highly distinctive characteristics - one lady looked and acted like Marilyn Monroe, another thought she was the reincarnation of Cleopatra and there was a lovely and very quiet newly married couple on their honeymoon. To add to this we had a fantastic Egyptologist and a very eccentric captain!

The sites along the Nile are some of the most fantastic I have ever seen, simply watching the banks of the Nile and how people went about their daily business was perfect. It's so green at the edge and every day we floated past donkeys and water buffalo taking drinks from the river. It was fascinating to look at the preserved remains of temples that influenced the early Greeks and later the Romans. Compared to Athens or Rome the remains are in fantastic condition. The temples are massive and the sculptures impressive. I went to the Valley of the Kings etc and the burial chambers and the drawings within them are a revelation. Our Egyptologist was highly informative and kept trying to catch us out when we answered his questions! I think he was exasperated at our lack of ability to retain knowledge and was simply bemused by the lady who thought she was Cleopatra!!

I have such fond memories of Egypt and would recommend it to anyone!!

Has anyone else been there and had a great experience? (Sorry for the essay - it really was THAT good!!)

I agree. It was all good. Beside traveling south down the nile, I also went to Siwa in the Western Desert. I recall our bus ride heading south from the coast inland. It was flat and dry as far as the eye can see.

Siwa is right at the edge of the Western Desert very close to the border with Libya. Here..you will see the sand dunes that you have always imagined.
