Polish roof collapse by Ellerd on 29 January 2006 11:54am

CNN is now reporting at least 60 people have been killed in the collapse of a roof at an exhibition hall in Katowice, Poland. 500 people were in the hall, so the toll is unfortunately expected to rise.

The cause of the collapse is believed to be the build-up of heavy snow on the roof. How could this happen? Why don't architects build peaked roofs in areas prone to heavy snowfall? Such a horrible tragedy, one that could have been avoided with a bit of commonsense.

I am going to contact the people I know in Poland to see if I can learn more.

Ellerd, my father taught me something about many architects. You slap them once, then slap them again to make sure they remember the first slap.

Many architects don't care if the building works. Their interest is that it looks pretty. That is what they win their awards for.

We'll be looking at the mother of all lawsuits, I suspect.

RIP to all those poor souls.

They showed the building on the news this morning - looked as if it were a shopping-mall-style building. Probably constructed in a minimal amount of time, for a minimal cost.

Recently we had some strange weather changes here in Middle Europe: first heavy snow falls, then warm temperature that started melting and finally came really cold air from Russia and dropped the temparature to -20°C and below. So I guess it wasn't snow anymore, but rather a compact block of ice, a half meter thick and far to heavy.

I read that the building was relatively new...how on earth could this happen? I think Ellerd may have a point there.

thinking of all those who lost loved ones, no matter why it happened its a sad day when tragedy strikes like this.

the building wasn't new, but was renowated about 4 years ago, as it had had some problems with the roof before
