The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Enron-The Last Chapter, Hopefully by George on 2 February 2006 9:05pm
This week the trials of the two top admistrators, Ken Lay and Jeffery Skilling, began. Just so you'll know, nobody is any sicker about what the company did than the citizens of Houston. I was once told that these two men were too slick to ever be charged with anything. Unless something totally unforeseen happens, they will go to prison, for a few years at least.

What I personally find hard to believe is that the chairman, Ken Lay, a man in his 60's, would even bother to plead "not guilty." He should make a deal with the prosecutors, go to prison for a minimal amount of time, get out, and enjoy whatever time he has left with his family. Both men have no reputations left and spending millions in their own defense, even though they can well afford it, is not a smart thing to do, IMO.

Everyone should check out the great documentary on Enron called "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room". It's new on DVD. It's also up for best documentary at the Oscars. This movie is a overview of this whole fiasco.

Now, I am thinking of seeing it. George, you are right. They would have done better to plead guilty and get it over with. I can't imagine what they hope to gain. Even if they are somehow acquitted, it will just be seen as they got away with it yet again.

They may very well get away with it. I'm sure they can outspend the prosecution - remember O.J.

And that film just won the Writers' Guild Award for Best Doc Screenplay. Yesterday on NPR, they played some tapes of Enron traders laughing at all the poor people they were screwing as they were making billions by manipulating the electricity market during California's energy "crisis". Absolutely chilling
