Also try the 1901 census.

Most sites involve a fee to actually see documents etc.

I am also trying to find my tree and can only go back, by word of mouth, one generation as my Mum and Dad were late babies, and so was I. I have only got as far as my Gt Gt Grandfather so far (online) who was born in 1847.

Before we had software and the internet, Ithe Mormons used to be the best source for tracing one's roots. No kidding. Maybe still are? Here's their site:
